What carries over from SEO
GEO is not a replacement for SEO · it is an extension. Several classic SEO foundations remain relevant:
Google Maps / local SEO still matters. AI engines like ChatGPT and Gemini pull from Google's data. A strong Google Maps listing (complete, accurate, well-reviewed) remains one of the most reliable citations sources for AI-generated local answers.
Site speed and accessibility. AI crawlers index pages that load well. A slow or inaccessible site is still a problem.
Domain authority signals. Backlinks and editorial citations still influence which sources AI engines trust. A business mentioned in a reputable Swiss publication is more likely to be cited than one that isn't.
Consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone). Name, address, and phone number must be identical across every directory, platform, and your website. Inconsistency confuses both traditional SEO and AI entity resolution.
What changes
Ranking position matters less. In classic SEO, being #1 vs #5 in a search results page made a measurable conversion difference. In AI-generated answers, you are either cited or not. The goal is to appear in the answer, not to rank higher within it.
Your website is less central. As noted earlier, AI engines draw ~5–10% from your own website for local-service queries. The rest comes from third-party sources. SEO's heavy focus on on-page optimisation is less decisive for AI visibility.
Prose content matters less than structured signals. Well-written, keyword-rich body copy is the core of on-page SEO. For GEO, machine-readable structured data (JSON-LD), clearly-labelled QA pages, and authoritative directory citations outperform long-form prose.
Content freshness behaves differently. A three-year-old schema.org JSON-LD that is accurate is more useful to an AI engine than a recently updated blog post. GEO rewards accuracy and machine-readability over content velocity.
The combined strategy
The most effective approach is not to choose between SEO and GEO but to layer GEO signals on top of a solid local SEO foundation:
- →Nail the local SEO basics first: Complete Google Maps profile, consistent NAP, good review velocity.
- →Add structured data: LocalBusiness JSON-LD on every page, with the specific type and full attribute set.
- →Create AI-readable answer pages: One page per key intent (hours/location, new patients, services, prices) · short, factual, structured as QA.
- →Expand to directories: Medicosearch, Doctorfmh, Comparis, Jameda · each is a citation source AI engines trust.
- →Address language gaps: Minimal multilingual FAQ pages for DE/FR/IT/EN as relevant to your market.
Swiss SMEs who do all five consistently score 65–80 on Klaréo's AI visibility scale. The Swiss SME average is 54. The average for businesses that have done nothing beyond a Google Maps listing is around 30–38.
The gap is almost entirely technical fixes · not content volume, not ad spend, not waiting for Google to notice you.
